The region around Thimphu is relatively easy for cycling, as compared to Punakha where the hilly countryside can make biking tougher for those who are not experienced cyclists.

If you’re going cycling in Bhutan, we recommend March/April or October/November as the best times of year to avoid extreme cold, wind and rain.

If you’re an intermediate cyclist or hiker, then the Bumthang valley is wonderful.

Undulating countryside, abundant bird life and tiny hamlets en route create an extremely picturesque landscape. Bamboo and rhododendron forests give way to gorgeous views from the Phephe La mountain pass.

For those who prefer to do day hikes, there are some lovely trails in and around Paro and Punakha.

After a day spent out in the countryside, you can return to your hotel in the evening to unwind in luxury.

Tiger’s Nest from Paro and Chimi Lakhang from Punakha are a couple of terrific day-long excursions which add on a touch of culture as well.

More experienced trekkers and those who have a passion for wildlife won’t want to miss out on the Merak-Sakteng Trek. This trail takes you through the Brokpa tribal settlements in the east of Bhutan, which is also the native habitat for rare species like the Red Panda and Snow Leopard.

 If you’re an avid trekker and photographer, then this is a trek worth doing.

The period between September and May is the best time to go hiking or trekking in Bhutan.
